Freelance WordPress Plugin: Market Product Manager

Published on May 22, 2008 One CommentPrint This Post Print This Post

Off-and-on for the past several weeks I’ve been working on a freelance WordPress plugin for the Market Theme, a premium WordPress theme that converts your site into an online store. The release of the plugin coincides with the release of Market 3, a brand new version that lets the user have both a dedicated blog and a store in one.

The theme is top notch. It makes selling both digital goods and mailed good extremely simple. So what was my role? I designed the Market Product Manager plugin which provides a much easier way to add products into the system. The theme, as most advanced themes, relies heavily on custom fields. For many users, however, custom fields are cumbersome or down right impossible to work with. The Market Product Manger plugin did a few things:

  • added several new input boxes to the write post screen which automatically populated the corresponding custom fields. This allowed for easy editing of custom fields and was much more user friendly.
  • added an ajax-esque file upload to allow users to easily upload images and have their URLs used as custom fields.
  • added a new management page that would allow the user to view only products. When viewing products only new columns were added to show the price of the product and if thumbnail images were set.

This was a fun project to work on. WordPress is quite a powerful blogging system that can convert to any style of CMS with a little coding know-how. If you haven’t checked out the Market Theme yet, now’s a great time to do so. And at $55 it’s quite a steal.

This would be absolutely great! I have clients who are not comfortable in x-cart, but love working in Wordpress. This would help them handle their stores better.
