Link Love For Commenters

Published on October 16, 2007 28 CommentsPrint This Post Print This Post

I just installed two plugins today that you guys should enjoy. The first one has been around for a while. It’s called DoFollow, and it removes the automatic nofollow that wordpress appends to all links commenters leave (such as the website address that your name links to in the comment).

The second, which just came out a month ago, is called CommentLuv. It scans the URL you enter for your website in the comments for your RSS feed. If it finds one, it shows the title of your latest post underneath your comment. If it can’t find your RSS feed, or if you don’t have one, it just posts a normal comment. You can see an example in a test comment I posted, below.

Why did I install these plugins? Because I know we all could use a little extra link luvin once in a while. But because I did this, your comment will take a few extra seconds to post while the plugin searches your RSS feed. Also, if you include more then one link in the body of your comment, it will be held for moderation. Thanks for the comments! Here’s the love!

EDIT: Plugins come and go so these particular ones may not be currently in use.

This is a test comment. Normally it won’t show my latest post (since it’s my blog!). But yours will look like this. Link love for my commenters! The link below is automatically appended after you submit your comment. Feel free to try it out here.

This is more then just link love - its community! Since installing this link on my own blog I find myself visiting more and more blogs from comments made on my own. Its like bookmarking network at your finger tips :)

    Thanks

Agreed! I really hardly ever clicked on an author’s name to visit their website when reading comments. This plugin makes it much more encouraging. I actually just finished reading your post. Ah, feel the luvin.

    Hey John!

That is a cool plugin, I will definitely stick it into my WordPress. It just makes sense ;)

    Thank you!

@Toly No problem! These are some of my favorite plugins for Wordpress. I was wondering why it didn’t pick up your RSS feed. Looks like you may have your feed either formatted different or in a different location that what it typically looks for. I clicked on your Feed and it told me I needed to open Outlook to read it. Hmm, interesting…

Hey John, I use feedburner, so my link just redirects to http://feeds.feedburner.com/jamming, I just re-checked it, and it seems ok.. Let me know if you still have problems signing up

Ah, found the problem. Looks like Opera (my browser of choice) doesn’t know what to do with your link “feed:http://blog.dotkam.com/index.php/feed/”, it worked fine in FireFox

  • Toly said: 8 October 31, 2007 at 2:27 pm

here is the fix for that ;)

    hi John…
this is a terrific plugin and I’m just wondering how long it will take for someone to design comment luv for blogger…as I am doing my link love manually :)

That’s the downside of of Blogger. My wife uses it for a personal blog and I know she gets frustrated when I talk to her about all the new plugins released for Wordpress. I checked out your site though, looks like you’ve managed to customize your blogger theme nicely!

I love that combo as well - I have been using it for a few months now.

PS - love the theme and the way the comments look.

@Matt Thanks for the compliment! The theme is a mesh from a few free ones, plus some of my own styling.

I have been using CommentLuv and DoFollow. They both rock.

Much like David, I’ve been using both too. DoFollow was one of the first plugins I installed after I read about it on Jeffro’s site (who probably took it from you?) :)

CommentLuv is great too. But sometimes it won’t work. I guess I should set the timeout higher.

Welcome to the DoFollow community! I installed one of the DoFollow plugins back in June, and so far things are going pretty well. As long as you’re able to stop the automated comment spam, removing nofollow does not seem to be much of a problem. I’m starting to get a few people commenting on recent posts now, and some of them are actually linking to interesting sites.

    Wow,
thanks for the tip! I didn’t know that there was a plugin for this. Although I don’t really use cell phones much, having the ability to read one’s site more easily from a mobile phone is an important consideration for overall marketing and PR (public relations, not PageRank).

Another cool link love plugin is the KeywordLuv. Seen it used often along with this plugin. Several links for one comment/post. May increase your comments.

Awesome! I was meaning to ask you, what’s the plug-in you use for separating the lay-out for your (admin/author) comments from the readers’ comments?

    Ciao,
    Bas

  • John Kolbert (author) said: 27 June 13, 2008 at 9:27 am

@Bas: Thanks for stopping by! I actually don’t use a plugin for styling my comments. I’ve hard-coded it into the theme. There are a few out there but I couldn’t find one that styled it the way I wanted to I just did it myself.

  • JS@BusbySeoChallenge said: 28 August 17, 2008 at 11:38 pm

    Interesting!
CommentLuv helps you reward your commentators by separating their name from their keywords in the link to their site. This gives them improved anchor text, which can help their site rank higher in the search engine results.
You can now leave a comment with your name as well as a keyword of your choice here and get a PR5 link back to your site! How cool is that? People pay big bucks for that and all you have to do is comment here.
