Free Airport Wi-Fi Greasemonkey Script

This entry was posted on Aug 21 2008

LifeHacker recently posted an article regarding a simple hack that can be used to bypass airport systems that require you to pay for Wi-Fi. The hack is to simply add ?.jpg at the end of the URL. This requires, of course, that the airport isn’t filtering image urls.

I’ve not tested this at any airport to see of it works, but I wrote a simple Greasemonkey script that will add ?.jpg to the end of every link in the page your viewing. This would allow for seamless browsing at the airport. I’m not condoning stealing bandwidth. So don’t do it. :)

To use this, just add this script to your Greasemonkey FireFox plugin. If you type URL’s in manually you’ll have to add the ?.jpg manually, but it will alter any links you encounter in the websites you visit.

or try installing this directly from FireFox (with Greasemonkey installed) if you have trouble installing the above file:

  1. Thief! Ha ha ha ha. If that is true then sweet. The internet should be available to everyone, not just those with cash.

  2. How is this installed? I have greasemonkey and other GM scripts, but they all automatically installed with an “install” button.

    Thanks

  3. Very nice. Thank you - i had thought about working on a script right after i heard about this work around. I wonder if it will work on some hotel systems. I hate that you can get a budget room and include free wireless yet the expensive hotels charge for the access.

  4. Heyeph:

I just added a new link. Try it or try this one:
direct install. Otherwise I believe you go to Tools->Install user scripts or something along those lines.

  5. I’m most definitely going to try this the next time I’m sitting at the gate ticked off without any Internet. :-D

  6. That install script worked. Thanks!

  7. Pretty slick. The airport here still has free WiFi, but I’m sure that eventually they’ll charge for it.

Hmm, It was actually built on 3.0.1 and other have reported sucesses with it as well.

  9. I think I need to give this a shot the next time I am in the airport. I love free internet (just ask my neighbors…)

  10. thanks for this script. I figure karmically I am ahead as I open up my wireless for anyone who wants to use it when I am not. If all the world did the same, none of us would have to hack anything ever again…

Visited Estonia recently and they claim to be a Wifi country, with free wireless access throughout the whole of Tallinn and in fact the whole country. Thats how it should be!

  11. installed, wish I can have time to try next time.

  12. Heh. Interesting trick. I had seen another attempt that was much more complicated, tunneling ip traffic within DNS traffic, which wifi hotspots typically allow.

I’m really surprised that any significant number of paid hotspots would be open to this sort of simple hack.
