Turn Your PSP into a Cell Phone…Sort of

Published on January 8, 2008 6 CommentsPrint This Post Print This Post

According to GameTap, Sony is making a deal with Skype that will let users of the PSP use their device as a telephone. Skype is an online VoIP service that lets users make calls to other Skype users for free over their computers, or to landline phones for a fee. Skype is already available for mobile phones, so this news isn’t that surprising.

There are several obvious limitations. Skype requires an active internet connection, meaning that users would need to be in an active Wi-Fi area. Also, users could only call other Skype users unless they pay the additional yearly fee. Currently, the update is only scheduled for the newer P-2000 model of the PSP. Exact pricing schemes have not been determined.

This seems like welcome news that greatly enhances the functionality of the PSP. I’ve never actually used one, but I’m told their wicked fun. Look for the free firmware upgrade in a few months.

I was reading about this yesterday actually. It’s not a bad idea.

I just wish they released this for the PS3 also. Since it allows you to use any bluetooth headset, it would make calls much easier. (And cheaper if the other party is using Skype).

I talk to my folks back home through Skype sometimes, but fundamentally I don’t like the technology. It’s been really unreliable for me compared to other IMs. Even MSN seems to work better most of the time. :)

@Mike This would be a nice addition to any online console really. I don’t have a PS3, but it would be fun on the Xbox 360 as well. I actually paid the $12 for a year to let my Skype call landlines. My wife and I use it at the end of the month when our cell phones are out of minutes. It actually works pretty good!

sounds interesting, but as far as I know there are already some available VOIP clients for PSP, even cheaper than Skype!

Great Idea but did not succeed. I think this might have worked better for online multi-players games.
