Theme Tweaking Complete

This entry was posted on Feb 06 2008

I’m pleased to announce that I’ve finished tweaking the theme for Simply-Basic.com. I wish I could say it went with out a hitch, but after I uploaded the theme I started getting a “500 Internal Server Error”. Those are never good! Turns out a plugin was causing an error with my .htaccess, but it should all be working now.

The updated theme sports a wider header, lighter background, and altered sidebar. The sidebar is taken from Forte, a theme that I like a lot. I love the tabbed interface. It lets me have lots of content without all the clutter. Also, the search box has been moved to the menu bar just below the header. It has no “search” button, as I feel hitting the enter button is pretty intuitive. The footer has also been reduced to half it’s previous size, and the content space of articles has been expanded by about 50 pixels.

I mentioned in my previous post that I liked the Twitter widget so much that I was getting rid of it and replacing it with something new. I’ve actually replaced it with the MiniPosts plugin, which allows me to post small “asides” or short blog pieces. I like this better because it gives me the flexibility to post about whatever I want with a format everyone is used to. Unfortunately it’s not as easy to post from my phone while I’m sitting on the john, but I think I’ll use it more often. The “Short News” pieces, as I’m calling them, will be included in the RSS feed and email summaries. Any thoughts on this?

If you come across any errors, please let me know. I didn’t tweak it too much, so there shouldn’t be many, but I’m sure I missed a few things. Thanks again for your patience this last week. Let’s get back to the articles you’ve come to expect from Simply-Basic.com!
