Transferring Woes: What the Heck is DNS Caching? Feb 27 2008 | 3 Comments

I’ve done everything in my power to resist switching hosts for Simply-Basic. Really, I have. Why? Because I’ve never done it before and felt very lost in the whole process. But I finally decided that it was time to make the plunge. I signed up for a new hosting account for a cool $83/year. Everything seemed to go very smoothly. My new host transferred all my files and databases for me. They transferred my domain and updated the DNS records. They even edited the wp-config.php file to reflect my new database on their site. What swell guys. Really, it was just sit back and make sure everything that needed to happen happened.

Where I went Wrong

Increase Your Site’s Accessibility with a Site Tour Feb 26 2008 | Be First to Comment!

Have you ever gone to a website and just didn’t know where to begin? Or have you ever had a favorite site be redesigned and not be able to find anything? Hopefully this doesn’t happen, but webmasters can help ensure that it doesn’t be easily creating a website tour.

I’ve recently been working on a project that is going to require a tour to show visitors how to get started. While searching for an easy way to do this, I came accross Amberjack. Amberjack is a free way to create tours of your website. It’s also extremely easy.

Content Protection: Disable Hotlinking Feb 20 2008 | 12 Comments

While thinking about the article I wrote yesterday (Content Theft: Die Splog Die), I came across an interesting article about how to deter image theft, or hotlinking. Hotlinking is when a website links directly to the images stored on your server. Not only is this stealing your image, but it is stealing bandwidth that you are paying for.

Spam websites that are stealing your content are usually also stealing your images. So in addition to the copyright notice that I’ve placed in the RSS and email feeds, I’ve decided to deter image hotlinking as well. This is done by editing your site’s .htaccess file to only load images when referred from your website (or other websites…

Copy/Paste Between Computers Feb 19 2008 | One Comment

Just found this interesting site called cl1p.net that lets you copy and paste between your computers via the internet. It works brilliantly. Save your data temporarily to a URL on their servers, then open that URL on another computer. Easy to use, no login needed. I’ll be using this in the future.
