Content Theft: Die Splog Die Feb 19 2008 | 2 Comments

Regular feed and email subscribers of Simply-Basic may have noticed a somewhat harsh-worded copyright notice in Simply-Basic’s articles (web readers don’t see this). The notice reads like this:

Copyright © 2008 John Kolbert. If you are reading this message anywhere besides your feed reader, then this article was stolen. Visit the original article at [url of article here].

Why do I do this? Lately Simply-Basic’s articles have been finding their way onto spam blogs. It’s quite simple for them. They have a plugin or script that takes the RSS feed from any site they choose, and it gets republished on their blog without any action by the person who set up the site. Why would they do…

Controlling non-WordPress Subfolder Access with .htaccess Feb 16 2008 | 4 Comments

WordPress users commonly use the built-in permalink redirection. This means that rather then having your new blog article’s URL look like “http://myblog.com/?p=78″, you make it look like this: “http://myblog.com/articles/my-article-title.” This feature means WordPress interprets the URL query of your blog and outputs the corresponding article.

I finally got around to trying it, and it looks quite impressive. The entire admin interface has been redesigned and is easier to use. One of the upgrades I’m excited about is the ability to edit the feed content which appears on the main dashboard page. Now I can stop getting all those annoying updates.

Remember, this isn’t the final, stable version. This is merely a pre-release that Chris has installed for the public to monkey around with. But it makes me excited for its release in a another…

Control Your Windows Mobile From Your Desktop Feb 11 2008 | 2 Comments

I just found a killer app for phones running Windows Mobile. It’s called My Mobiler. It let’s you control your phone from your desktop PC when it’s connected via active sync. I’m sure you’re thinking “why would I want to do that?” I thought the same thing. My Mobiler, however, let’s you easily transfer files, and cut and copy between your phone and desktop. Even better, it lets you easily take perfect screen shots and even video.

Below are two images. The one on the left is a screen shot of my phone taken by My Mobiler. The one on the right is a screenshot of the actual My Mobiler interface.

This program seems ideal for developers…
