Windows XP Service Pack 3

by John Kolbert as Tech News | Tags:

Anytime now Microsoft is set to release Windows XP Service Pack 3 to its Windows Update program for the masses to download. Or if you can’t wait, like me, you can download it right now via the direct links discovered by gHacks.

SP3 doesn’t introduce many features that the average user will notice. After my upgrade I honestly didn’t see a single thing new. There are, however, a significant number of security upgrades and fixes that administrators may notice. For those interested, Microsoft has released a whitepaper detailing the changes you can expect (pdf link).

For the many of you (myself included) who can’t stand Vista, upgrade to SP3 when you can. It looks like we’ll be using XP for quite sometime.

Thanks for the tip on SP3! I recently bought two new Dell computers, and I saw that no one will be able to order a new Dell computer with Windows XP installed after June 18 [1]. I imagine other vendors will have a similar date, since it sounds it looks like Microsoft is driving it.

@Randy: Thanks for the link. It’s too bad its going to be that much more difficult to get XP on a new computer. I’m half tempted to switch to MAC just for that reason. I gave Vista a try and upgraded back to XP after a month.
